Type Locality and Naming

Southernmost Sichuan. The Xiaoping Fm was named by Yang Xianhe in 1976, The naming section extends from Xinjietian to Xingping (Beds No. 8-12), Yanbian County, Sichuan Province. Upper-middle formation of Yanbian Gr.

Synonym: (小坪组)


Lithology and Thickness

The formation is composed of dark-grey sericite slate, sandy slate, carbonaceous sericite slate, sandwiched with meta-sandstone and carbonaceous slate. The base consists of thick-bedded metamorphosed tuffaceous fine conglomerate and meta-sandstone. Graded beds are developed in the formation and convolute bedding and undulating erosion surfaces are recognized within it. The formation is 2260 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is in conformable contact with underlying Yumen Fm

Upper contact

The top is disconformably covered by the Zhagu Fm

Regional extent

Southernmost Sichuan. It is distributed mainly around Yalang, and Xiaoping, Yanbian County, Sichuan Province.
